Let me guess: you don’t always feel at peace in your heart. Was I right? Okay… let me try again. You want to have peace in your soul, and you’re really trying, but circumstances just seem to get in your way. Spot-on, huh? Stress, burdens, and anxiety can sometimes go by another name: it’s called the storm, and it affects everyone in the world at one point or another.
There’s someone who’s pretty good at calming the storms, though. You might know of him–
“A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!””
Mark 4:37-41 NIV
If this same Jesus truly commanded the winds and waves, don’t you think he has the power to calm your heart too? When it seems like everything is bleakest, God steps in and calms the storm.
But how can I have faith in the middle of it?
That’s the hard part. God has complete and perfect control, but we have to trust Him enough to surrender your problems. That’s really all it takes. Just surrender everything to Him. It sounds easy, and I know it sounds too good to be true, but it is the truest thing there is. Don’t get me wrong, learning to truly surrender is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do, but God’s waiting with open arms.
Lay down the school finals, breakups, anxiety, loneliness, and fear. There’s really no place for that. When you let go of the those things and place them in God’s hands, it’s saying, “God, I trust you. I’ve done the best I can, but I don’t have any more. Take it, take it all.” And He does. Think you’ve got something too big for Him to handle? Try Him.
Learning to truly surrender everything to God will grant you the peace you’ve been waiting for all this time. It just requires you to give up the white-knuckled grip on your burdens in exchange for the calm.
God’s never going to leave you to fend for yourself. But you’ve got to go to Him. He won’t force you to surrender. That’s all up to you. Give it a try. I’ve seem Him move mountains.
“No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Joshua 1:5 NIV
So let this change you! Don’t live like you’ve got to hold the weight of the world on your own! You’re never alone. So put down your burdens and step into the light! The storm has passed, it’s a brand new day. And it’s peaceful.
